Assisted Dying

On March 21st 7.30pm at the Manx Legion Club, Douglas, Liberal Vannin has invited Dr Alex Allinson, MHK for Ramsey to lead a discussion on the possibility of introducing legislation on Assisted Dying during the current administration.

Vicky Christian from the Facebook Group Let Me Choose will give some background to their campaign – Let Me Choose | Facebook

With a growing number of jurisdictions around the world now having legislation in place and with the UK’s British Medical Association dropping their longstanding opposition, Liberal Vannin believes that the time is right to hold formal public consultation on this issue. We do not take a party stance for or against, as this is a matter for individual public conscience; recognising that many people would like the option to choose an assisted death in certain circumstances, whereas others have concerns about eroding the sanctity of life or have doubts about the safeguards to protect vulnerable people from coercion.

We don’t want to rehearse the arguments in this announcement, but recommend anyone wanting background information (as at September 2021) to check out:

Since then, Jersey Scotland and the UK House of Lords have started to consider legislation in this area.
